Candy (specifically boiled sugar
candy) is confectionery basically made from sugar and water in a
concentrated solution with added colorants and flavourings.
Vegetables, fruit or nuts glazed
and coated with sugar are called candied.
Candy means different things to
different people depending on where they come from.
For example in North America the
term 'candy' is very broad and can mean any of the following:
candy bars, chocolates, liquorice, sour candies, salty candies, tart
candies, sucking candies, taffy, gumdrops, marshmallows, chewing gum
and more.
In other parts of the world such as the UK, and commonwealth
countries Candy can be referred to as sweets or confectionery
In Australasia (New Zealand and
Australia) candy is commonly called lollies however New Zealand
makes a further distinction by calling any chocolate candy
'chocolate' and any non-chocolate candy 'lollies'
For the purpose of this site and accompanying blog Chocolate Candy
includes all confectionery that is made from chocolate or chocolate
derivatives.
